Coasteering

WHY IS IT CALLED COASTEERING?

In recent years, coasteering has become one of the UK’s most popular adventure activities. Although people have been exploring coastlines informally for years—finding hidden coves and secluded beaches—the term “coasteering” first appeared in a climbing guidebook for Devon. The name combines elements of mountaineering and orienteering, capturing the essence of navigating rugged coastal terrain.

The term “coasteering” was coined by Edward C. Pyatt, blending “mountaineering” with “coast” to reflect this unique activity. The concept of structured coasteering sessions, as we know them today, was pioneered by Andy Middleton in Wales in 1985

How We Keep You Safe

Before You Enter the Water

Before every session, you'll receive a clear safety briefing covering what to expect and how to stay safe. Each person is fitted with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, and helmet for full protection and comfort.

During the Session

Your guides carry first aid kits and waterproof communication devices throughout every session. They're constantly assessing conditions and adapting routes around tide timings and sea state to suit the group. Emergency procedures are in place for every location, so you can focus on enjoying the adventure knowing everything is covered.

All complete our in-house coasteering training programme and achieve the NCC Guide Award — the industry's gold-standard qualification. Our guides don't just coasteer in Newquay; they train across Cornwall's entire coastline, from St Agnes to beyond, giving them unparalleled knowledge of coastal conditions and route options.

We maintain a maximum 1:8 guide-to-participant ratio, ensuring personal attention, smoother pacing, and a safer, more rewarding experience than larger group operators.
