Lenox Hill History: The Park Avenue Armory
In view of Apartment 3S is the Seventh Regiment Armory, also known as the Park Avenue Armory, one of New York's most historic brick buildings, and the only armory in the United States to be built and furnished with private funds.
It originally served as the headquarters for the 7th New York Militia Regiment, known as the Silk Stocking Regiment due to the disproportionate number of its members who were part of the city's social elite. This dependable group was regularly asked to quell civil disorders such as the Astor Place Riot of 1849. The regiment helped fight large fires and took part in protecting citizens and businesses. It participated in the inaugurations of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, and of the Statue of Liberty in 1886. It guarded the remains of President Lincoln upon their arrival in the city.
In addition to full-time doorman and elevator attendant, the building is equipped with bicycle storage, gym, private storage, and a laundry room. 901 Lexington is pet friendly with board approval, and in-unit washer and dryers are permitted. There are no seasonal restrictions on renovation, and up to 50% financing is allowed. There is a flip tax of 3%, paid by purchaser.
