A Message from Our Director

Happy Fall,
“Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.” – Author unknown
Yes, it is Fall once again…a time to reflect and honor how we have changed over the past year, a time to let go of whatever is not serving us, and a time to be thankful for the opportunities we have been provided to become our best selves. Life wants to keep us in overdrive. However, as the days become shorter, Fall is beckoning us to rest and renew. I hope you are taking this time to care for yourself in whatever ways you can. Cape CBI is here to support you with several new offerings (see below) and my latest musing with some tips on how to escape the endless trappings of our minds.
Yours truly,
Dr. Kristen Mulcahy

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a therapy that works with the brain to help you heal from trauma and other distressing life experiences. The act of focusing on a trauma memory, beliefs about oneself, strong emotions, body sensations, or current tigers, while connecting with the brain's processing capabilities, and using bilateral stimulation (tapping or eye movement) helps to reduce the nervous system's unhelpful response- fight, flight, freeze or fawn. The result is a decrease in the intensity and vividness of the memories and responses. Current research shows EMDR is a successful treatment for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, addictions, early childhood memories, as well as many other distressing lived experiences.
Anne McGuire provides EMDR therapy at Cape CBI and is currently receiving consultation from experts in the field. Anne is accepting new patients of all ages.

New Weekly Free
Teen LGBTQ+ Support Group
|
|
The LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) Teen group is for any teen 14-18 years old who identifies as having a non-hetero and/or non-cisgender identity. Any and all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome to this group.
This is a safe space to discuss concerns, seek support, process issues around exploring identity, and discuss issues in daily life (family support, bullying, transitioning, pronouns, school, self-esteem, etc).
Discussion topics may include navigating school and social spaces, reflection on how other identities inform one's experience of being LGBTQIA+ (intersectionality), exploring relationships with family of origin and chosen family, and using self-care and coping strategies to improve mental health.
Courtney Lawlor - Support Group Leader
Courtney is a member of the American Counseling Association and SAIGE (Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities). She is also a volunteer for The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ youth.

Our Mindfulness Challenge
|
|
Mindfulness is achieved by becoming fully aware of the present moment and accepting any thoughts, feelings, or sensations that may arise in the mind or body. Simple in concept. Challenging in practice…at least for me, anyway. Too often, I lose sight of the present moment and become thoroughly entangled with the voice or “maniac” in my head. I also must admit I am a terrible meditator. Despite some valiant efforts (years ago, I was trained in Transcendental Meditation), it is still so easy for me to get sucked back into all the trappings of my mind day in and day out and forget that there even is a present moment. So, here are some things that I try to remember or use to keep me more mindful and present:
- Be gentle and realistic with yourself. Most of us spend most of our day analyzing the past and anticipating the future, forgetting the present moment altogether. Unfortunately, this is a normal part of being human. Therefore, we need to give ourselves credit for any success we have. One moment of presence is better than none. Acknowledge any successes and keep building on them.
