Created in honor of his 85^th birthday on November 13, 1996

Together with Warren McCulloch, Norbert Wiener, John von Neumann, and others, Heinz von Foerster was the architect of cybernetics. In particular he developed a second-order cybernetics which focus on self-referential systems and the importance of eigenbehaviors for the explanation of complex phenomena. In von Foerster’s words, it is the “cybernetics of observing systems”. Von Foerster’s famous distinction between trivial and non-trivial machines is a starting point to recognize the complexity of cognitive behavior. A trivial machine is a machine whose operations are not influenced by previous operations. It is analytically determinable, independent from previous operations, and thus predictable. For non-trivial machines, however, this is no longer true as the problem of identification, i.e., deducing the structure of the machine from its behavior, becomes unsolvable. Finally, as long-term director of the Biological Computer Laboratory in Illinois he provided a fruitful platform for studies of complex systems and had essential influence on many cognitive scientists and (radical) constructivists.

Heinz von Foerster was born 1911 in Vienna, Austria, where he studied physics at the Vienna Technical University. 1944 he received a Ph.D. in physics at the University Breslau. After World War II he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he hold the professorship for signal engineering from 1951 to 1975. From 1962 to 1975 he also was professor for biophysics and 1958–75 director of the Biological Computer Laboratory. Additionally, 1956–57 and 1963–64 he was Guggenheim-Fellow; 1963–65 president of the Wenner-Gren-Foundation for anthropological research; 1971–72 secretary of the Josiah-Macy-Foundation of the cybernetic program. H. von Foerster wrote a large number of scientific publications.

Heinz von Foerster died on 2 October 2002 in Pescadero, California.

Fourth International Heinz von Foerster Congress 12–14 November 2009 at the University of Vienna. The overall motto is “Lernen / Learning.” The opening lecture was held by Ernst von Glasersfeld. A selection of papers presented at the conference has been published in Constructivist Foundations 5(3).

Third International Heinz von Foerster Congress 16–18 November 2007 at the University of Vienna. The overall motto is “systems/systemics.” In addition, there were two special sections, one on Ernst von Glasersfeld and his work on the occasion of Ernst's 90th birthday, and one on the life and work of Gordon Pask, on the occasion of the opening of the Gordon Pask Archive. Claus Pias in Berlin edited a legacy of Heinz von Foerster, the The Macy-Conferences 1946–1953 originally edited by Heinz von Foerster himself. Volume 1 has already been published by Diaphanes. Volume 2 will follow soon. The protocols of the Macy conferences mark the beginning of the discipline "cybernetics" to discuss "circular-causal and feedback mechanisms in biological and social systems". The book gives access to the first step of this interdisciplinary discipline and its authors such as Norbert Wiener, Warren McCulloch, Claude Shannon, Margaret Mead, Donald MacKay, Gregory Bateson, W. In honor of his 85th birthday the Institute Vienna Circle, the Institute for Advanced Studies, the Ludwig Boltzmann-Society for Cognitive Science, and the Austrian Society for Cognitive Science organized the International Meeting The Cultural Roots of Constructivism & Cognitive Science in Vienna, Autumn 1996 (incl. pictures from the meeting).

A festschrift for Heinz von Foerster was edited by Ranulph Glanville and M. C. Jackson in September 1996. It is the issue vol 13 no 3 of Systems Research, journal of the International Federation for Systems Research, published by Wiley. Besides contributions from E. von Glasersfeld, K. Krippendorf, N.
