Hey everyone

As the new year is getting closer, I've been reflecting on what 2025 has been like for me, and I wanted to share a small personal status update.

2025 has been a year of developer crisis and struggle. I explored several directions — from BBMOD 4, to further BBMOD 3 updates, to my long-standing dream of a 3D MMORPG in GameMaker — but struggled to maintain motivation across them.

When I first started doing 3D in GameMaker as a teen, I was told by the community that I shouldn't, that it wasn't possible. I kept pushing forward to prove that I could do it — that anything is possible in the right hands with enough dedication.

Almost two decades have passed since then, though, and the reality is that I'm not that kid anymore. I'm married, I have an almost 2-year-old son, and in a few months it will be 4 years since I started working with YoYo on GameMaker itself. The same motivations don't drive me anymore — and honestly, I believe I've proven my point many times over.

Because of that, I've decided to change the status of almost all of my open-source projects to "Community Project", and to change their license from MIT to CC0 — essentially giving them to the community to keep alive, instead of carrying that responsibility myself.

The only exception is BBMOD, which is my most beloved project. I'm keeping it MIT-licensed, but I'm changing how I work on it:

The main bbmod3 branch now points to the latest release (3.22.5), and all further work lives in a new bbmod3-dev branch, which is for personal tinkering only. I'm currently not planning new feature releases — only critical bug fixes if necessary. I'll still try to help out in , and I'd also really encourage you to help one another there.

This is not me leaving GameMaker. Not at all. This is me giving myself space to rediscover why I once fell in love with it in the first place. I've renamed #ragnarok-dev to , where I might occasionally share things I make purely for fun — no obligations attached.

I also want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported my work over the years — especially through Patreon. That support has meant far more than just funding; it was encouragement, validation, and a reminder that the work mattered. While I'm changing how I personally engage with my projects going forward, the Patreon continues to support BlueBurn's ongoing work, and that support is still very much appreciated.

A bit in advance: happy 2026 💙

Hey everyone, I’ve got a mixed update for you today.

As you know, we’ve had several polls recently where I asked for your input on the future of BBMOD. Based on those results, I created a new GitHub issue for BBMOD 4, updated the website and README, and even started development. Here’s a small preview of what was in the works:

However, a few days ago I decided to take down both the GitHub issue and the announcements. Not because BBMOD 4 is cancelled -- it isn’t -- but because I’m putting it on hold.

For the next major release, I want to deliver the best possible performance along with the most ambitious features. To achieve that, BBMOD 4 will need to use C++ extensions. Right now, GameMaker isn’t in a great place for this:

The current runner (GMS2) doesn’t support such extensions across all platforms -- which, according to the polls, is very important to many of you.
The upcoming GMRT runner is expected to support them, but it’s not ready for production yet.

Starting BBMOD 4 now would be risky, since I’d likely have to rewrite large parts of it once GMRT is released. That’s why I think it’s wiser to wait.

That said -- no need to be discouraged! Development won’t be standing still. There’s still a lot of room to expand BBMOD 3, starting with features like animation layers, already available in the bbmod3 branch, along with other improvements:

I’m also planning to revisit some unfinished work, including parallax-corrected cube maps and screen-space reflections:

So while BBMOD 4 will take a bit longer to arrive, BBMOD 3 still has exciting updates on the way. Thanks so much for your support and understanding! ❤️🙏

everyone I forgot to add that a C++ extension would mean limiting the export to desktop platforms only (Windows, Mac and Linux). Feel free to change your vote based on that

everyone I need help to decide this one ☝️ for good! 🙏
