All profit to MusicHelps charity – please donate for Christmas

In the spirit of the great folk singer Woody Guthrie, Reb Fountain has reimagined Steve Earle’s ‘Christmas in Washington’ as ‘Christmas in Wellington’. With the backdrop of Te Tiriti movement and the hardship folks and our environment are facing here in Aotearoa, Reb calls on Woody Guthrie, alongside some of our most beloved kiwi heroes, to rise again and help us navigate our way forward.

All profit will go to MusicHelps, Aotearoa, who supports hundreds of projects across New Zealand, each using the power of music to change the lives of thousands of New Zealanders in need.

lyrics

It's Christmas time in Wellington
We got what we deserved
A shift in gear for another year
And things just gettin' worse
Conservatives drink the kool-aid-free
And thank their lucky stars
That we still buy into the dream
And they still lead the charge

I sat home in Tāmaki
Just staring at the screen
With uneasy feeling in my chest
Wonderin' what it means
So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie to us now

I followed in your footsteps once
Back in my travelin' days
Somewhere I failed to find your trail
Now I'm stumblin' through the haze
There's sharks upon the highway now
A song can't get around
So I sold my soul for a stream that flows
And I'm stuck here in this town

Come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help us out
Come back Woody Guthrie to us now

There's foxes in the hen house
The cows have us by the horns
The UNs bust, better them than us
We’re not so green no more
But if you listen to the radio
They’ll tell ya all was well
But you and me and MJ Savage know
We’re going straight to hell
So come back, dear Rod Donald
Rise Dame Whina, Helen Kelly
Raise the flag of indigeneity
Till all of us are free

Come back to us Baxter,
Father Dibble, Michael King
We’ll be marching in the streets
Till the bells of freedom ring
So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
