For over a decade, the British International School of Cairo has been hosting an annual Model UN conference. BISCMUN has managed to bring hundreds of students, teachers and guests from areas and schools all across Egypt, providing countless opportunities for delegates, chairs and directors alike to stimulate debate, public speaking as well as enhancing leadership, rhetorical and diplomatic skills. In our past conferences, we were honoured to host guest speakers from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), and the Arab League. Past and present leaders of our planet have truly taken great steps and initiatives in destroying the Earth. Climate change, wars, rebellions and human rights violations have all ruined the balance of our world as our existence remains threatened. However, BISCMUN has managed to give young people the chance to voice their opinions on these threats by simulating the real United Nations in order to encourage the formation of innumerable resolutions; all aimed at counteracting our past mistakes. This year our theme of Embracing Evolution stemmed from the looking at current and past issues and how they've progressed over time. This year, we are hoping to shed light on what steps we as students, undergoing a simulation of the real UN can take towards our long but necessary journey to worldly justice. Whilst each committee is debating different topics, all of them circle around our unanimous goal of justice. Each topic was picked to raise awareness and act as a reminder of the lack of justice we have in our world today. In BISCMUN XI, we stand by the fact that "justice without force is powerless and force without justice is tyrannical". |
