Cheryl's Story

My 10 year old daughter was the first to experience migraine headaches and coughing fits. The symptoms were unexplainable until we discovered Aspergillus mold in our duct work.

My husband later became very ill from an environmental exposure to mold under the cover of an outdoor ice rink. I began experiencing symptoms as well before finding even more mold caused by a plumbing leak in our home.

When we discovered the mold and the impact it was having on our whole family, I began doing a ton of research, educating myself even more on the topics of mold, air quality, moisture management, and building defects that could lead to mold.

We are all doing well, but it was a long and costly road to recovery. One I would like to help you avoid.

I’m sharing these resources here on the Blog, as well as providing courses and masterclasses for pros and homeowners who want to further their knowledge on safe air quality and mold avoidance.

Providing homeowners and building professionals with education to understand building defects that lead to water damage or mold, how they can build well to prevent that in the future, and how to find safe solutions to their current building challenges.

I enjoy research and evaluation of complex problems related to buildings. The opportunity to make a difference for building occupants is a bonus. The opportunity to create awareness and teach people to be able to improve their living environment and health for themselves and their families. My own family was affected by mold and I want to share my knowledge to help others avoid this same experience.

The myth about my profession is that architects are only artistic designers. In actuality the profession is focused on protecting the health, safety and welfare of building occupants which often requires complex building science, structure and other technical understanding. For what I do, the myth is that water damage and mold are harmless.

Cheryl is a licensed architect and industry educator providing strategies for professionals, building owners and individuals to better deal with water damage, mold and toxins in buildings.

Her past responsibilities include 5 years as Midwest Regional Director and Senior Technical Director for the wood industry in North America.

She brings tenacious research abilities, analytical thinking and experience to the topic of environmental health, while sharing design and construction solutions that make a difference.

Cheryl is a frequent speaker at architecture and engineering conferences around the U.S., participating on the Board of Directors for Association of Licensed Architects – Illinois, and the American Lumber Standards Committee.

Currently based in Wyoming, Cheryl holds a B.S. in Architecture with High Honors from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota- Minneapolis.
