Ubuntu 11.04 installed but shows old desktop appearance

My screen appears the same as Ubuntu 10, but as I understand, its supposed 2 appear different, right.
I'm running a Systemax Venture desktop (found on side of road), probably 256 mb of RAM (don't know how to check from within Ubuntu, and its the only OS installed). Approx 20gb HD.

If you log in to the Ubuntu Classic desktop, is it ok?

Yes. Everything seems to be working fine, just minus the new desktop.

It does not give me a choice (that I can recognize) to boot to anything other than the classic desktop.

sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a

It is possible the computer you described lacks a 3D-accelerated video card new enough to support the Unity interface.

Try installing the "unity-2d" package and restarting. You should see that as a session choice while you are logging in.

Your video chip isn't brilliant and 3D acceleration is not given to it under Linux.
