Strange keyboard behavior on c key

Asked by Philip Smith

On latest LTS with everything updated.

I seem to get this occasional behavior where the c key just keeps repeating and the only way I can stop this is by interrupting with the delete key. This has happened across a number of different apps.

The simplest example I can find is when I am in a terminal window perhaps tail -f on a log then I interrupt with a Ctrl^C and then I'll get a load of cccccccccccccccccccc in the terminal window.

I thought this might be a wayland thing but I switched to x.org and its still happening.

Just wondering what I might do next to see if I can get to the bottom of this.

Machine is an X1 Carbon Gen 12.

Another note - mechanically the key seems fine.

If you plug the keyboard into a windows system....is it the same?

I can't plug it into a windows system as its the laptop keyboard. But what I can also say is that when I have an external keyboard attached the same issue occurs - hence I don't think its the keyboard. I think its something to do with how some of the key presses are being interpreted.

I am aware that Ctrl-C within the terminal is more of a cancel operation vs Ctrl-C within many other apps where that is the Copy function.

Ah apologies. I though it was USB based and external.

If you boot a different (non-ubuntu) based system like Suse or Fedora, is it different there? Just to explore the issue.

Is it the same in the Ubuntu live USB boot?

This is a tricky issue. Since it happens with an external keyboard too, it's likely a software/driver problem. Try booting from a Ubuntu Live USB - if the problem disappears, it's a configuration issue in your main installation.

At Metalworks BC, we see similar principles: whether troubleshooting keyboard inputs or fabricating custom steel railings, the key is isolating variables to find the root cause. Hope you resolve this soon!

Can you help with this problem?
