Is it acceptable to mount many encrypted directories?
I'm using my backups not only for disaster recovery, but also for idiocy recovery. I didn't have to restore from scratch for a long time, but it happens that I need to restore a file from backup that I had inadvertently deleted. Or that I'd like to look at an older version of a file. For that purpose, I keep multiple snapshots on an external disk.
As my entire $HOME is encrypted by ecryptfs, in the backup I can only see the encrypted files and that's as it should be. In order to make all snapshots from my backup visible, I'd have to mount up to 30 encrypted directories. Presumably this is possible. The more interesting question is whether this is a good idea. Does it cause large resource consumption or otherwise stress the system?
