How farmers use less water and make better profits

If you're looking for ways to save water, maximize efficiency, reduce waste, and make the most of what you already have, this book has covered you. Featuring proven hydroponic practices that'll show how your farm could run better while conserving water and producing healthier animals. Thinking Outside The Soil is a guidepost for any farmer looking to save money and increase their production yield without sacrificing quality. It details why hydroponic fodder production methods are so advantageous compared to soil cultivation—saving time, money, and, most importantly, valuable resources like water. From information on which fodder crop is right for your farm all the way to the principles of hydroponic fodder, everything is explained in the language farmers use!

WARNING: But first, a warning, this book is not a complete guide on hydroponics.

The first part of this book shows the origins of hydroponic farming. It talks about how hydroponic fodder gets higher yields while using over 90% less water and space than the same crops grown in the field. With drought and more mouths to feed, hydroponics' water-saving and land-sparing potential are important to not only farmers but everyone who lives on Earth.

Many field crops that farmers use to feed livestock can be used for hydroponic fodder. Yet, some crops do better than others. Selecting the best crop is an important decision for producing high-quality fodder. The book's second part is called the ABC's of Hydroponic Fodder, which talks about six different kinds of plants that produce exceptional yields of animal feed: Alfalfa, barley, clover, corn, cowpea, and sunflower.

The book's third part will cover three practices used to grow fodder - microfodder, greenwater, and sprouting.

Author Interview

1. What would you say if you had to explain this book in one or two sentences?

This book will help farmers adopt hydroponic feeding practices to grow animal fodder to save water, time, and improve their bottom line. Farmers are our best stewards and can be the change we wish to see in the world.

2. Who are the major influencers on your life and philosophy?

My master gardener grandmother, veterinarian father, nurse mother, and deceased paramedic brother. I owe them my compassion for nature, life, and resilience through life's trials and tribulations. Personal influencers are JD and Tawnya Sawyer, Dr. Harry Ako, Ed Otsuji, Dr. Mark Merlin, April Williams, Julius Gutierrez, Noel Huber, Rachel von Bodungen, Jim Klein, Steven M. Biemer, and Dr. Judith Dahmann.

Mentors from afar have been Luther Burbank, Robert C. Clarke, Dr. James Rakocy, Nikola Tesla, Mark Twain, PT Barnum, Albert Hofmann, Temple Grandin, Bruce Lee, Mary Kay, Napoleon Hill, R. Buckminister Fuller, Terence McKenna, Marie Curie, Howard Resh, Nikolai Vavilov, Norman Borlaug, Malcolm X, Dale Carnegie, and Alan Watts.

3. What other authors or books influenced you to write this one?

James Sholto Douglas' Hydroponics because he pioneered a philosophy I like to call open-source hydroponics. Sholto took the technology to the people of India, and they built an industry. Then, Joel Salatin's Salad Bar Beef turned me into a grass guy. I like Joel's holistic view on agriculture and for being vocal about it. And no other has influenced me more than Think and Grow Rich. It should be required reading. Maude Barlow, Ralph Nader, Kossiakoff's Systems Engineering, Michael Pollan-Second Nature, Temple Grandin-Animals in Translation, Gary White & Matt Damon-The Worth of Water all helped shape the conversation and creative style.

4. What are some main ideas you integrate into this book or your life?

Systems Thinking, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Aquaponics

5. What would be another choice if you could not use your current book title?

Grow with the Flow or The Art of Fodder in Water
