Gabriel de León has saved the Holy Grail from death, but his chance to end the endless night is lost.
After turning his back on his silversaint brothers once and for all, Gabriel and the Grail set out to learn the truth of how Daysdeath might finally be undone.
But the last silversaint faces peril, within and without. Pursued by children of the Forever King, drawn into wars and webs centuries in the weaving, and ravaged by his own rising bloodlust, Gabriel may not survive to see the truth of the Grail revealed.
A truth that may be too awful for any to imagine.

‘If you were bitten by Empire Of The Vampire, you’ll know what to expect; if not, here’s another beautifully constructed, epic maelstrom of high-stakes gore and adventure… Awesome.’ Daily Mail
Praise for EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE
‘A ripping read – dark as black coffee and savage as a slit throat’
Joe Abercrombie, bestselling author of the First Law trilogy
‘A gothic bloodbath that will leave any reader breathless. The story is a vast apocalyptic canvas, reminiscent of Justin Cronin’s THE PASSAGE or even Stephen King’s THE STAND, yet Kristoff’s work stands on its own ruthless merit as the opening gambit of a richer tale yet to unfold. I can’t wait to return again to this rich, lush, and bloody world. Until then, read this book now!’
James Rollins, no.1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE LAST ODYSSEY and THE STARLESS CROWN
‘A wonderfully crafted tale, the pieces as meticulously interlocked as fine woodwork. A chilling new take on vampire lore and those who must battle that darkness. EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE looks fearlessly at how ruthless Good must become when confronted with unrelenting Evil’
Robin Hobb, SUNDAY TIMES and NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE ASSASSIN’S APPRENTICE
'Brilliant and unputdownable, with tenderness and light bound into the bitter dark of a grim and fascinating world'
Laini Taylor, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of STRANGE THE DREAMER

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2026Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSecond volume in the Empire of the Vampire series. Which began with book one. Which was of that title. This is not a jumping on point. New readers start there. Regular ones read on.
This volume runs sixty hundred and forty six pages. There's six parts which are divided into various chapters. There's the occasional illustration. I like these I will call the style gothic which suits the story and it's tone really well. There's a prologue. Maps at the start and end. Plus a cast of characters with brief notes at the start. This bit does help if it's been a while since you read book one.
As with that this is strictly for grown ups. Gore and violence and other very strong stuff.
It picks up from the end of book one.
The narrative style does take a bit of getting used to. In that the story is being told by main character Gabriel to someone else. So it will dip out of first person occasionally. And Gabriel isn't the teller for all of it.
That plus small print does mean this needs your full attention to get into it.
And the narrative does also split the main characters up at a point, so there will be sections for one and then back to the other.
It did take me a little while to get back into this as it had been a year since book one. But it steadily grabbed me. I think it was when the characters were separated that did it. Because I did start to get invested in one strand. That was just thanks to characterisation and good chemistry which made me care about people and want to see how it would end for them.
And steadily I got more and more hooked. It really left me on tenterhooks in the final hundred or so pages, as there is good jeopardy there. So I was hooked and wanting to see how it would turn out for people.
Let's just say it does manage to keep that going right to the very end. Which does a great job of making you want to see what happens next.
Third book 'Empire of the Dawn' is not out. Can't wait to get onto it. Ultimately a very good read that does reward your effort.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 December 2025Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis carries on in the same vein of form as the first. As someone who usually avoids books like this with vampires (as they are usually like twilight and more about romance than actual fantasy. I am really enjoying this. Its easy to read and skips along really nicely. While I was in Japan I found this easy to pick up and read while on the shinkansen or coach trips and I am looking forward to reading the last book and seeing how the story concludes (but not in any rush).
Story line is fun, nicely paced and the author's style of writing is well considered in describing a bleak and barren world.
You have to suspend your sense of logic if you want this book to work.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2024Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseFirst the obvious this is book two of an ongoing series don’t start here. Much like book one is this is an overwrought gothic fairytale with a lot of heart. It’s heavy on the grit and violence like the authors nevernight series with plenty of sexy times. It’s not for the faint hearted. If you didn’t like book one I don’t think this will change your mind.
Spoilers possibly..
It is a well paced story directly following on from book one set in a medieval world where eternal night has fallen and vampires have risen. This like book one follows Gabriel a SilverSaint a member of a warrior order made up of the children of vampires as he strives to save the Grail. Characters are well fleshed out especially the relationship between Dior and Gabriel the antagonists are formidable and the lore isn’t less then interesting and the action is well written the cast is diverse and queer but not the main focus of the story just is. While it shares a lot of gonzo, over the top, energy with nevernight I do think this is the stronger more balanced series.
I am not going to go into -plot details if you have read book one you have the essentials and between the narrative device , where Gabriel and later another character are telling the story of events to a captor it is easy to accidentally spoil.
End spoilers
Easy to like a stronger book then book one which I already thought was excellent no sophomore slump here look forward to book 3.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 May 2025Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseGood story that I really enjoyed and I do understand that vamps are hundreds of years old and have probs tried most things because of the boredom but for God's sake does everyone else in vampire novels always have to be bi-curious these days. It's starting to get a bit tiresome!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2025Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis book and the first one are just quite simply fantastic storytelling, if you love your stories dark and sad, grim and beautiful, violent and tender, horrific and heartbreaking.
The action, violence and horror is so well done, but it's the characters and quiet times that stick with you.
Dark, mesmerising genius sprinkled all the way through.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 December 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe story the twists.5 star read.i didnt want it to end.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseJay is now one of my favourite authors. His style is captivating and draws you in. The characters are beautifully developed and have clear identities. Superb book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 April 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchasePicked up Empire of the Vampire after many years of hardly reading and it captured my attention within the first chapter right until the end, and I am glad to say Empire of the Damned did the same thing except 10 times stronger. From start to finish I was enthralled in the world, characters and story it has to offer. Both EotV and EotD got me back into reading and I am going a little insane waiting for part 3. Overall an amazing book I would recommend to pretty much anyone who enjoys horror.

Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseFast pacing and easy read. Hard not to be hooked. Yes, some WoKe stuff staining a great story but they get tax reductions for that, otherwise this is a nice angle on the Vampire story and History.

Peter HolmReviewed in Germany on 13 June 20245.0 out of 5 stars Endlos spannend & düster

Ömer Ç.Reviewed in Turkey on 18 November 20245.0 out of 5 stars Kitap yaklaşık 5 ya da 6 gün gibi bir sürede geldi
