Generation by Generation: A Modern Approach to the Basics of Genealogy
Purchase options and add-ons
This guide is organized according to the actual process used in genealogical research: Start with yourself, then move on to living family and relatives, and then move backwards in time, generation by generation. Each chapter describes a time period and the kinds of records available for that era, allowing beginners to learn about new types of records just as they need them.
The guide is divided into two parts. Part I discusses such things as relationships between family members, naming practices, genealogy software, how to review existing research, and the basics of DNA testing. Part II begins with a discussion of the major genealogy websites, and then explains the most important record categories for all generations from the present day back to the colonial ea. There are also chapters devoted to searching for the origins of American families in the records of Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, and non-English-speaking nations.
This book makes ample use of consecutive Internet screen shots to take the mystery out of online searching. And it is written by an expert genealogist and teacher who is equally conversant with traditional search methods and the digital world.

A Foundational Book on Beginning Genealogical Research
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024I bought this book and read it cover to cover. I am an advanced researcher (credentialed genealogist). Advanced researchers do not need this book. It is extremely valuable if you are a beginner, have hit or miss research skills, or have never had the opportunity to learn to research in a structured, efficient manner. This book fills a desperate need in the marketplace of genealogy education, and I cannot (sadly) think of another one like it at present. It makes no assumptions and starts at the beginning. It is a very easy read - there may have been some printing/font issues in the beginning but the copy I received was clear and legible. Some of the image illustrations are a bit fuzzy but can easily be viewed online.
If you would like to improve your skills as a beginner/intermediate researcher this book can increase your knowledge and understanding of how to "do" genealogy to achieve your goals. Recommended.

Great Content, Terrible print job
Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2023The content is excellent. The printing of the book is so poor as to make it almost unreadable. The text if very faint and the exhibits are even fainter.
