A shift from "I am" to "We are" by loving, learning, and playing

Today, our world is relentlessly driven by acquisition and consumption—ironically, we call this progress. This book compels us to pause and reconsider the direction we are taking as humanity.

It introduces the powerful concept of MEI (Means–Ends Inversion)—the tendency to chase the means while mistaking them for the ends, leaving us perpetually unfulfilled and disconnected from what truly matters.

The book also critiques our modern “Darwinian” society, shaped by extreme individualism and a narrow interpretation of “survival of the fittest.” This idea, originally rooted in biological evolution, has been misapplied to justify competition within the human race itself.

Instead, the book proposes a compelling alternative: survival can be collective and inclusive—extending beyond humans to other life forms. As a species uniquely capable of large-scale cooperation, we have the potential to build systems grounded not in rivalry, but in collaboration.

Ultimately, the book invites us to shift our pursuits—from the short-lived highs of adrenaline and dopamine to the deeper, more sustaining bonds associated with oxytocin.

A must-read for anyone who has ever questioned the meaning of life and the purpose of our existence on this planet.

Loved Learning about Flourishing, now to Play

Love, Learn, Play! Whoa. Simple. Yet, profound words. I really resonated with this book. It feels like an antidote to the bitterness and division that saturate so many channels today. The ideas are well researched and compassionately explored, and the stories pull you in.

I found myself repeatedly asking: can it really be this simple? But, sometimes the simplest truths are the deepest.

One of the book’s most important insights is that happiness, so often confused with pleasure or optimization, should not be our life’s quest. Happiness emerges as a byproduct of living a meaningful life. The LLP framework makes a compelling case that flourishing looks different for each person, depending on one’s circumstances and endowments, but that the underlying orientation remains the same: love, learning, and play. It's said that it's the journey and not the destination that matters. LLP seems to be the journey, when we can properly see our surroundings.

What surprised me the most is that Love, Learn, Play doesn’t feel like instruction. It feels like a mirror. Its simplicity lowers resistance, and in doing so reveals what parts of ourselves have been neglected. Where love has become conditional, learning has hardened into certainty, and play has been crowded out by seriousness. The confrontation is inward, not imposed. You see yourself more clearly. A light to some of our shadows.

I started this book expecting some abstract philosophy, but it felt very down to earth. The way Akhil Gupta talks about love, learning, and play made me realize how little space I give those things in my daily life. I liked that the ideas felt doable, not overwhelming. It made me stop and question why I rush through everything. I’m already trying to be more present at work and at home.

    Essential Read for Our Times

As someone who had the privilege of teaching a happiness course at Harvard, I approach books on well-being with both academic rigor and deep curiosity. Love, Learn, Play isn’t just another self-help book.... it’s a big, heart-centered, and genuinely insightful framework for how we think about happiness and how we live our lives.

What sets this book apart is its intersectional and inclusive approach. Akhil seamlessly weaves together Western psychological insights with Eastern philosophical wisdom which results in a rich, coherent philosophy of living that honors multiple traditions and experiences. This is rare: many books borrow fragments of Eastern thought superficially, but here Eastern values about community, purpose, love, and inner awareness are treated with the depth and respect they deserve.

Akhil Gupta is someone I know personally, and what you feel in these pages is the same compassion, curiosity, and integrity he brings to every conversation. He writes not from abstraction but from lived understanding.

Whether you are new to the study of happiness or have long studied it academically, this book offers new lenses to love more deeply, learn more intentionally, and play more fully.. which, in my view, are the ingredients of a meaningful life.

A thoughtful guide to living more fully

put this in title Love, Learn, Play is a quietly powerful book. Instead of offering formulas or quick fixes, Akhil Gupta invites the reader to slow down and reconnect with what truly matters.

The book draws from a wide range of wisdom traditions and modern psychology, yet it never feels heavy or academic. Everything is distilled into three simple ideas that feel both timeless and practical. Love is described as empathy and connection, learning as openness and self-awareness, and play as curiosity and joy. Together, they form a framework that feels relevant to everyday life.

What stood out to me was the emphasis on play. It is refreshing to see play treated not as something childish or optional, but as an essential part of being human. The book gently challenges many assumptions we carry about productivity, success, and meaning.

The writing style is clear and reflective, making it easy to read while still leaving a lasting impression. This is a book that encourages self-inquiry rather than instruction.

A meaningful read for anyone seeking balance, perspective, and a deeper sense of flourishing.

Love, Learn, Play is one of those rare books that feels both timeless and immediately useful.

Akhil Gupta distills centuries of philosophical, spiritual, and psychological wisdom into three simple ideas that are easy to remember but powerful to practice. What makes this book stand out is not just the clarity of the framework, but how gently it invites you to reflect on your own life without judgement or jargon.

The sections on love and kindness feel especially relevant in today’s fast paced and often fragmented world. Gupta draws from Eastern and Western traditions in a way that feels inclusive and grounded, showing how compassion, curiosity, and joy are not abstract ideals but daily practices. The emphasis on play as a serious part of human flourishing is refreshing and surprisingly profound.

This is not a book you rush through. It is one you pause with, underline, return to, and quietly apply. Whether you are feeling burnt out, searching for meaning, or simply wanting to live with more intention, Love, Learn, Play offers a clear and humane way forward.

Highly recommended for anyone looking to live with more depth, balance, and joy.

What I appreciated most about Love, Learn, Play is its simplicity without being simplistic.

Akhil Gupta takes wisdom that often feels distant or abstract and brings it into everyday life in a way that feels calm, thoughtful, and actionable. The idea that flourishing comes from loving, learning, and playing sounds obvious at first, but as you read, you realise how rarely we truly live all three together.

The book moves smoothly across philosophy, psychology, and lived experience, drawing from multiple traditions without pushing any single belief system. The chapters are reflective and easy to absorb, making this a book you can read in short sittings and still take something meaningful away each time.

The emphasis on play as a necessary part of adulthood was particularly eye opening. It reframes joy, curiosity, and creativity not as distractions, but as essential ingredients of a balanced life.

Love, Learn, Play is ideal for readers who want insight without heaviness and wisdom without preaching. It offers a steady reminder that a meaningful life is built through small, conscious choices made every day.

A thoughtful and reassuring read that stays with you long after the last page.
