Product description
Legendary actor Sir Donald Wolfit (Svengali, Room at the Top, Becket) joins British horror queen Barbara Shelley (Village of the Damned, Dracula Prince of Darkness, Quatermass and the Pit) in a lurid tale of ghastly experiments in a Transylvanian prison. Despite being staked as a vampire, the sadistic Dr Callistratus has become governor and is now using prisoners for the blood transfusions that keep him alive…
Produced by Robert S Baker & Monty Berman (Jack the Ripper, The Hellfire Club, The Saint), directed by Henry Cass (No Place for Jennifer, Castle in the Air, Happy Deathday) and written by notorious Hammer scribe Jimmy Sangster (The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy), this long-awaited UK Blu-ray premiere has been remastered from original vault elements and is packed with bonus features.
Also starring Vincent Ball (The Black Rider, A Town Like Alice, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll), Victor Maddern (I’m All Right Jack, Circus of Fear, The Lost Continent), John Le Mesurier (The Hound of the Baskervilles, Eye of the Devil, Dad’s Army) and Bernard Bresslaw (The Ugly Duckling, Too Many Crooks, Carry On Screaming!)…
Dare you step inside the terrible place Callistratus calls “my other laboratory”?

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2025This film is great not being a hammer film it stars the lovely Barbara Shelly with great support from sir Donald Wolfitt Vincent ball and victor madden brilliant picture on blu ray quick delivery well done Amazon
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2013Very good plot line, intelligent dialogue. This film keeps you on the edge of your seat. Can truly be described as a horror film. Modern horror films rely to much on special effects but most have poor plot lines.this film is set in the past always a plus for me.well acted with a good plot.would recommend .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2022This is not a film in the same league as the Hammer Horror classics. It looks and probably was cheap. Some of the make-up (particularly on actor Victor Maddern) is poor and unintentionally hilarious. Donald Wolfit looks somewhat out of place in this film and is certainly no match for a Cushing or a Lee, his performance more than a little mannered and theatrical. All in all, this is an amusing example of British horror but it's pedestrian compared to the output of Hammer and Amicus. For completists only, really.
Restoration, though, is decent enough and this Blu-ray is streets ahead of Renown Pictures' 'digitally remastered' DVD (on 'The Renown Vintage Chiller and Thriller Collection').
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 June 2022Love this film and what a great transfer to Blu Ray
What more can one say, Donald Wolfit as the totally evil and deranged Dr Callistratus , Victor Maddern as a disfigured henchman and the lovely Barbara Shelley.
Great story and characters

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 December 2012A no nonsense film with a great story and well acted throughout, If you do not have this gem of a movie then I suggest do not let it slip and add it to your collection, you will not be disappointed
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 July 2022Although not a Hammer horror, the lesser known Blood Of The Vampire keeps to the spirit of the famed British studio with this tale of a mad doctor transferring blood from prison inmates in the hope of curing his vampire infested body. It also has a script written by Jimmy Sangster and Barbara Shelley as heroine, both well associated with Hammer. Donald Wolfit gets top acting honours in his usual barnstorming style as Dr. Calistratus that well makes up for the occasional slack moments in plot.
More bloodier than the Hammer fare of the 1950s, with all cuts fully restored for this BluRay release, it incurred wrath from the BBFC during its production as historian Jonathan Rigby relates in one of a excellent collection of Special Features, another being a 47 minute account of British horror movies of the period, also narrated by Rigby. Both should please the horror devotees, as will the 30 minutes of Barbara Shelley trailers, although not all the selections are from genre movies.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2014This DVD came very quick,it has good picture and sound quality. The film was very good like a lot of these old Hammer films. I'm very pleased I purchased this DVD.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 June 2022This review is for the BLURAY released June 2022. An excellent transfer, though some may consider the colours slightly muted, but the picture is clean and clear. Good sound, and at last, Good SUBTITLES!. Plenty of extras, mainly about Sanngster. Sadly the film is not quite worthy of the hard work gone into this BluRay. Wolfit dominates, which isn't hard as he has virtually no competition from Ball, and even Shelley (gorgeous as ever) is a bit subdued. The story is not Sangster's best, and tends to drag a bit. The ending almost makes up for any previous lack of action, and the 90 minutes did seem to pass pleasantly enough. I hate to say this, but I did miss the "Hammer" atmosphere and Cushing/Ripper et al. Still there was always Ms Shelley. 5 stars for the Bluray and extras, but only 3 for the film - hence 4 star rating.

£‥±± ポンドニテンプラマイReviewed in Japan on 13 August 20144.0 out of 5 stars 「ハマー、ユニバーサルとは一味違った(でもそっくりな)吸血ゴシック・医療ホラー。」
Jacci HarrisReviewed in the United States on 19 November 20221.0 out of 5 stars NOT playable in US
This blu-ray movie was not playable in the US. The Amazon description did not indicate this as usual with European DVD/blu-ray discs. I sent a message to Rare Waves regarding this after I purchased it but they replied that they could not answer this question (????) My research on this blu ray disc indicated that there IS a U.S. version so I was hopeful I might get that one. No such luck!!!
