Ebony S. Murphy
Teacher, Consultant, and Writer in Brooklyn
I’m Ebony, an English teacher living and working in Brooklyn, NY. I love teaching poetry, YA lit, memoirs, essays and the classics. One of my hobbies is fundraising for progressive and feminist causes.
I was born and raised in a CT Teamster household, and I'm a former SEIU 1199 direct care worker. I’m an alumna of The University of Connecticut's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Neag School of Education. I have trained with The Campaign School at Yale (2012), Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute (2021) and Emerge California (2021). Also in 2021, I was selected for ADL LA’s Michael LaPrade Holocaust Education Institute and Facing History’s California Civic Fellows Program. In summer 2018 I was invited to Harvard Divinity School as a fellow of the Religious Literacy Summer Institute for Educators.
Until summer 2022 when the magazine's run came to an end, I served on board of directors of Bitch Media, which offered sharp, engaged, feminist responses to pop culture in print and online. I now serve on the board of The Feminist Press.
I am passionate about community and civic engagement and supporting the literary and cultural arts.
