We said that in 1909, Britain was the “first country to introduce an old age pension, funded by the state and targeting the poorest”. Denmark introduced such support for its poorest older people in 1891. Germany launched a pension scheme in 1889, but it was a contributory system (The golden age of comfortable retirement is nearly at an end, 2 May, Journal, p4).
The Equality Act outlaws practices that disadvantage people with a disability, not the “Disability Act” (Consumer champion, 9 May, p50). This error was in print only.
