About Vice President Ken Hopper:
Kenneth Stephen "Ken" Hopper (born April 3, 1946) is an American politician who is the 50th and current vice president of the United States. Prior to his vice presidency, Hopper represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate from 1984 to 2024. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 50th mayor of Boston from 1979 to 1984 before serving in Congress. Hopper was the Democratic nominee for vice president in the 2000 election.
The eldest of fifteen siblings, he was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to the affluent Hopper political family. He studied at Columbia University before earning his MBA degree from Cornell University. Hopper was elected as mayor of Boston in 1978, a position previously held by his mother. As mayor, Hopper presided over a major investment on Boston's infrastructures and expansion of the public transportation system. He was re-elected as mayor in 1982.
In March 1984, Hopper was appointed to the U.S. Senate by his father, the then-governor of Massachusetts, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Ted Kennedy in a plane crash. Hopper served the remainder of Kennedy's term before being elected to a full term in his own right in 1986. He went on to be re-elected as Senator in 1992, 1998, 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2022.
Initially a centrist New Democrat, Hopper became a progressive in the early 1990s. He supported legalizing same-sex marriage, abortion, and recreational marijuana nationwide, enacting single-payer heath care system and universal basic income program paid by increasing taxes for the upper class and corporations, implementing $15/hour minimum wage and equal pay regardless of species, forgiving student loans, withdrawing U.S. troops from overseas and emphasizing diplomacy in foreign policy, cutting the defense budget and military spending to increase funding for education and welfare, transitioning into green energy, reforming the police, and banning assault rifles.
A founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Hopper was considered by many to be one of the most progressive Senators, though he rejected the term Democratic Socialist. He was also known for working with Republican presidents and members of Congress to find compromises. The longest serving U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, Hopper had planned to seek an eighth term in the Senate in 2028. Hopper was also one of the wealthiest members of Congress, having amassed a net worth of $120 million over his forty year tenure as Senator.
Hopper unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for president three times. First in 2000, he lost to incumbent Vice President Alan Gordon, who later selected Hopper to be his vice presidential running mate. In the closest U.S. presidential election in modern history, the Gordon - Hopper ticket lost to Republicans Gage W. Shrub and Willy Cheyenne after a recount in Florida despite winning the popular vote. Later in 2008, Hopper lost to then-Senator from Illinois Barry Ohana in the Democratic primaries. He finished second in both the 2000 and 2008 primaries. Hopper again ran for president in the 2024 Democratic primaries; he finished third behind former Vice President Jamal Harrison and then-Governor of California Edith Vaughn, who won the nomination.
Although Hopper was a vocal critic of Vaughn, whom he called "inexperienced", "incompetent", and "too moderate", Hopper was selected by Vaughn to be her vice presidential running mate. Vaughn's decision to choose Hopper was met with some criticism from her camp, as Hopper said several controversial remarks regarding species, including the now-infamous "wolf pups are just as smart and nice as rabbit kits" speech, and described Vaughn as "the first mainstream Predator-Carnivore who won't go savage and eat you and is bright, articulate, and good looking" upon accepting Vaughn's offer to be her running mate; though he later apologized.
The Vaughn - Hopper ticket went on to defeat the incumbent President Donald Trumbull and Vice President Mike Pounce. Hopper resigned from the Senate on November 20, 2024, to lead the presidential transition team. He was inaugurated on January 20, 2025, as the 50th vice president of the United States. At age 78 years, 9 months, and 18 days, Hopper is the oldest person to assume the vice presidency.
As vice president, Hopper is the leader of the White House Anti-Herbivore Supremacy Task Force, chair of the National Space Council, and director of the Office of Species Equity. Hopper became a close advisor and personal friend of Vaughn, mentoring her and representing the administration in negotiating with congressional Republicans. However, Hopper privately disagreed with the president on several occasions, notably when she authorized the invasion of Yemen, ordered the bombing of Afghanistan, and opened dialogue with Iran to negotiate denuclearization. These disagreements led to rumors that Hopper may be dropped by Vaughn as her running mate in the 2028 presidential election. In December 2026, Vaughn confirmed Hopper will be her running mate in 2028, stating their different views help create a more balanced approach. Since January 2027, Hopper, in his capacity as president of the Senate, is oftentimes the tie-breaker in the Senate of the 120th Congress, which is split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans. Hopper has expressed his intention to run for president succeeding Vaughn in 2032.
