CDC Backyard Poultry Survey Results—What Was Learned and Why it Matters for H5 Bird Flu Prevention

While most of the cases of H5N1 that have occurred in humans in the United States were workers exposed to infected dairy cows and commercial poultry farms, there have also been cases that have occurred among people exposed to birds kept in non-commercial, backyard flocks. With this fact in mind, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) sought Extension’s assistance to put out a survey to learn more about backyard flock owners and their birds.
The CDC noted great uptake of the survey with Extension’s help. Hear about the results from the survey, how it helped improve H5 bird flu prevention activities, and what you should know for your clientele and youth exhibitors.
