Runnin' Down a Dream by Bill Gurley
This book appeared on the Chicago Tribune Bestseller List, but more compelling was its subtitle: “How to Thrive in a Career You Actually Love.” For students and staff in a community college, career development is on everyone’s mind. What Bill Gurley recognized early on was that following all the advice to pursue that avenue to a “safe” job can result in, well, boredom. Rather than relating his own experience, he has gathered other life stories to illustrate his six principles to flourish in your own career choice.
You may come away with several impressions, such as that passion for a pursuit involves “obsessive” curiosity. Bob Dylan’s story reflects this one. Several of the stories illustrate the hustle that goes into learning and creating the field that drives you: the restaurant owner who visited, literally, all barbeque outlets available, or the hairdresser who snuck into fashion shows to learn what was needed from a great hairdresser. The art of building a peer group occurs when a coach started learning from and supporting others who were new to coaching – until they all became forces in the profession.
Luckily, Gurley makes it clear that there is no age limit to this recognition that passion leads to a purpose-filled life and avoids the trap of “career regret.”
