Keyword SMS auto response automation

Automatically add contacts to your SMS list and send a custom response when they text a specific keyword to your dedicated Hive number

Written by Mark

Getting contacts to subscribe to your SMS list should be simple. Hive’s keyword SMS automation makes it effortless: once configured, anyone who texts your chosen keyword to your dedicated Hive phone number is automatically added to your contact list.

Need to find your dedicated mobile number? Go to the Campaigns tab, select SMS, and you’ll see it listed at the top.

Once your keyword SMS auto-response is configured, activating it is even easier. You’ll get a unique URL that, when clicked on a mobile device, opens the user’s messaging app with your keyword pre-filled (and your number set). You’ll also receive a QR code that when scanned with your phone, does the same!

This article covers how to set up the keyword SMS auto-response automation, how to access the unique link and QR code, and practical use cases and examples for promoting them.

Create a keyword SMS auto response

  1. Navigate to Automations and select the Keyword SMS Auto Responses (prebuilt) template.

  2. In the trigger block, select Sends you SMS message with keyword and enter your keyword or phrase.

  3. Add global rules if you need conditions that apply at every step.

For most keyword automations, you don’t need to add extra rules since we want all users who text the keyword to receive the SMS reply. Even if you’re not adding additional rules, you must still open the Global Rules block and click Continue to confirm this step and lock in the automation setup.

  4. The automation now defaults to a logic split to save you manual setup time:

    • The "No" Path (New Subscribers): These contacts will be sent the SMS Compliance Message first to ensure they receive the required opt-in disclosure.

    • The "Yes" Path (Existing Subscribers): These contacts bypass the compliance message and receive only the Welcome Message.

  5. Compliance Message: Review the opt-in disclosure. We recommend leaving this as-is to remain compliant with carrier regulations.

  6. Welcome Message: Click the Welcome Msg SMS block to customize the response that every subscriber receives.

  7. Click Save automation and toggle Live to turn the automation on.

Share your keyword (link & QR code)

Once your automation is saved, go back to your main automations menu to access the two share options:

  • Share link – a mobile-friendly link that opens the subscriber’s messaging app with your keyword and phone number pre-filled. This is great for adding to your emails or social media.

  • QR code – a scannable code that does the same on mobile devices. This is great for onsite engagement.

Easy ways to promote

  • Add the link to social posts (e.g., “Swipe up to join our SMS club”).

  • Place the QR code on onsite signage (box office, lobby posters, merch table).

  • Add a button with the link in your email campaigns to convert your email audience to SMS.

Tips & best practices

  • Keep keywords short and easy to remember (e.g., JOIN or VIP).

  • Mention the keyword and number clearly wherever you promote it.

  • Pair your auto-reply with a quick welcome perk (e.g., discount or early access) to boost conversions.

  • Periodically test your keyword by texting it from a device not already subscribed.
