How to exclude ticket purchasers of a specific event from campaigns

Send an email to your subscribers, except for those who bought a ticket to a specific event

Written by Mark

If you’d like to send an email or SMS campaign in Hive but exclude contacts who purchased tickets to a specific event, you have two options:

  1. Exclude purchasers during campaign setup

  2. Create a reusable segment in advance

Whichever method you choose, your campaign will be sent to all eligible subscribers except those who purchased tickets to the event you’re excluding.

Option 1: Exclude purchasers while building a campaign

  1. Start a new campaign

    • Create a one-time email or SMS campaign.

    • In the first step (Choose recipients), click Add filters.

  2. Apply the exclusion filter

    • Select All event data > Purchased ticket(s) > Purchased tickets to a specific event.

    • Search for and select the event you want to exclude.

  3. Adjust the filter logic

    • Change the did parameter to didn’t.

    • This ensures the campaign only sends to contacts who have not purchased tickets for that event.

Option 2: Create a segment

  1. Go to the Segments tab and click New segment.

  2. Name your segment clearly — e.g., Summerfest 2025 – Excluding Ticket Holders.

  3. Keep the segment type as Live so it automatically updates with new data.

  4. Click Add filter > All event data > Purchased ticket(s) > Purchased tickets to a specific event.

  5. Search for and select the event you want to exclude.

  6. Change the did parameter to didn’t.

  7. Click Save.

Your segment will populate with all contacts who haven’t purchased tickets to the selected event. When you’re ready to send a campaign, you can select this segment as your audience.

Pro tip: A live segment automatically updates as new ticketing data syncs into Hive and can be reused for future campaigns.

Example: If Sam hasn’t purchased a ticket yet, they’ll be included. If Sam buys a ticket next week, they’ll be removed automatically.
