Customize a pre-built welcome automation

In just a few clicks, automatically send an email welcoming subscribers as soon as they join your list

Written by Mark

Sync your newsletter signups directly into Hive through a capture app—like a signup form, signup page, or the Hive SDK. Once your signups flow into Hive, you can send a welcome email (or SMS) automatically the moment someone joins your list.

Why welcome messages matter

  • 74% of people expect a welcome message when they sign up—so don’t leave them waiting.

  • Welcome automations are powerful: they track revenue attribution just like campaigns, and many accounts see strong returns simply by sending a quick hello.

  • Interest is highest right after signup. Directing contacts to your event calendar, website, or featured offer can inspire immediate action.

  • Sending a welcome message right away keeps your list healthy and engaged. If you wait too long, subscribers are more likely to ignore or unsubscribe.

Customize a pre-built welcome automation

Option 1: Use your Hive signup form

  1. Go to your Signup form page and click the pencil icon beside your form.

  2. On the Edit signup form page, click Save & Get Embed Code.

  3. Click Edit Welcome Email/SMS.

Hive will automatically create a welcome automation with your signup form segment selected. You can then skip ahead to Step 4 below.

Option 2: Build from the automations page

If you’re using a signup form, landing page, or SDK, you can build your automation directly in Hive.

  1. Go to the Automations page and click New automation.

  2. Choose either:

    • Create from scratch → set the entry trigger to a specific landing page.

    • Pre-built welcome automation → triggered when a contact enters a segment.

  3. Select Enters segment and choose the segment linked to your capture app.

  4. Click Global rules to define subscriber eligibility.

    • For most welcome automations, no extra rules are needed—just confirm that the contact is still in the segment.

  5. Edit the action (send email or SMS). Customize the message to reflect your brand.

    • Need a refresher on the template builder? See this article.

    • Pro Tip: Add a Confirm your subscription button linked to your homepage. A first-click signals inbox providers (like Gmail or Outlook) that your emails are wanted, improving deliverability.

  6. Click the gear icon in the top-left corner to give your automation a clear name.

    • By default, contacts can’t re-enter a welcome automation for 1,825 days (5 years). Adjust this setting if needed.

Turn on your welcome automation

  1. In the top-right corner, toggle from Paused to Live.

  2. You’re done! New subscribers will instantly receive your welcome message—helping you build trust, engagement, and deliverability from day one.
