How to exclude a subset of contacts when using multiple filters

An overview of how to include a group in a contact search while specifically excluding a subset of that same group

Written by Mark

Hive gives you hundreds of filters so you can target the right contacts for each campaign. These filters are powered by your ticketing integrations, manual imports, Hive capture tools, and contact engagement with past campaigns.

The most successful users make filters and segmentation a regular habit—helping them personalize outreach and boost results.

Where to find filters in Hive

Filters appear in several key areas across your account:

  • Segments: Build reusable groups of contacts with filters. Learn more about segments here.

  • Contact list: Click Add filters to narrow down your contact table. Your list view will refresh to only show matching contacts.

  • Campaign builder: When choosing recipients, you can add filters on the spot or select a saved segment.

  • Automations: Use Global rules to decide who can enter or move through a workflow. Learn more about automations here.

How to include and exclude filters

When you add filters, always double-check the dropdown conditions. Many filters give you options like “lives in” vs. “does not live in”—these small differences can completely change your audience.

Using AND, OR, and groups

  • AND: Contacts must match all filters.

  • OR: Contacts must match any filter.

  • Groups: Combine filters together so some use AND logic while others use OR logic.

Example: Targeting engaged locals who haven’t purchased

Let’s say you want to email contacts who live near your event, haven’t bought tickets, and have recently engaged with your emails.

  1. Include location: Select your city and set a radius (e.g., 60 miles).

  2. Exclude ticket holders: Use the Purchased tickets to event filter, choose your upcoming event, and set it to exclude buyers.

  3. Include recent engagement: Add the Recent email opened filter for the past 14 days.

  4. Confirm your logic: Make sure you’re using AND so all three conditions apply.

This setup returns subscribed, engaged contacts most likely to convert.

  • If built on the Segments page, you can save it as a live segment that auto-updates with new data.

  • If built in the Campaign builder, the filters apply only to that specific campaign.
